Secret Shopper

Similar to retail customer service Secret Shopper programs, Communities Against Substance Abuse Secret Shopper programs send volunteers ages 21 and older to complete alcohol sales and service risk assessments in bars and restaurants in East San Diego County. Volunteers look out for over serving, underage drinking, drug use and other activities linked to alcohol-related problems in the community.

In addition, Secret shoppers may also be involved in assessing various retailers for sales of illegal drug paraphernalia and marijuana retailers that may be in violation of the Attorney General’s guidelines.  Results of the assessments are shared with establishment management to improve business practices.

The benefits of getting involved as a volunteer include:

  • Reducing alcohol-related crashes
  • Making a difference in your community
  • Reducing youth access to alcohol
  • Receiving a $25 stipend for each completed assessment
  • Having fun

The requirements necessary to participate as a volunteer include:

  • Completing a 2 hour training
  • Participating in teams of 2
  • Having the availability to volunteer late at night

Please note that our Secret Shopper programs do not accept court mandated volunteers.
