Cajon Valley Middle School Discovery Club Youth Recognized by Mayor Lewis at City Council Meeting

On December 18, 2002, thirty youth from The Discovery Club along with parents, relatives and friends gathered to recognize students for outstanding academic achievement at the El Cajon City Council meeting.

Mayor Mark Lewis presented the following students with awards for academic achievement roll, a GPA of 3.02 or higher, or Honor Roll, a GPA of 3.5 or higher: Revan Sadiq, Dina Mohamad, Maria Estrada, Alex Torum, Flora Baba, Saul Bovey, France Hanna, Rony Petras, Lakesia Robinson, Adam Torum, Violet McKay, Liela Hoeschen, Andy Reyes, and Mariam Mundher.

Kathy Weeden, site supervisor of the Discovery Club at Cajon Valley Middle School, is thrilled that over half of the members in the program made honor roll or academic achievement. "These kids have worked so hard to get their grades up and we know next semester more students will be receiving awards because they are excited to see what their friends have accomplished", stated Mrs. Weeden.

The Discovery Club at Cajon Valley Middle School currently has 38 members and offers youth homework tutoring, life skills activities, games, and most importantly a safe place to hang out after school. According to Adam Torum, a three year member, " The best part about the Discovery Club is meeting new friends and playing pool."The Discovery Club is an after school program for middle school students, made possible by the partnership between Communities Against Substance Abuse (CASA), the County Of San Diego, the city of El Cajon Recreation Department, and the Cajon Valley Unified School District. It is funded, in part, by the Critical Hours program of the County of San Diego Health & Human Services Agency.
