Debate On Alcohol-Free Beaches
Supporters and Opponents Square Off On Controversial Ballot Initiative

What:

Supporters and opponents of eliminating alcohol from Mission and parts of Pacific Beach debate this controversial ballot measure. During the debate, sponsored by the League of Women Voters, representatives from both sides will square off on several issues, including underage drinking, public safety and economic concerns related to beach drinking. San Diego voters will have a final say in the upcoming March 05, 2002 election.

When:

Monday, February 25, 2002, 6:30 to 8:30 PM

Where:
Lewis Middle School
5170 Greenbrier Ave.
(Take I-8 East; Exit at Waring and head north; Turn left on Greenbrier)

Who:
Jill Galante, San Diego Safe Beach Task Force
Jennifer Turner, San Diego Safe Beach Task Force
Robert Lasher, Mission Beach resident—“Yes on G”
Three representatives from the opposition

Background:
In April, the San Diego City Council approved an 18-month trial ban on alcohol in Mission Beach and parts of Pacific Beach. Opponents collected enough signatures to prevent the temporary restriction from going into effect. Then in July, the City Council voted, unanimously, to place the initiative on the March 05, 2002 ballot and let voters decide whether alcohol should be eliminated from the beach. If approved, Mission and Pacific Beach will adopt temporary 24-hour alcohol restriction until December 31, 2002. Currently, drinking is prohibited from 8:00 p.m. until noon.
