Its
a Crime!
Super Bowl Teen Drinking Major Problem
Students Warn Parents and Other Adults about Hosting Underage
Drinking Parties and Giving Alcohol to Minors
What:
San Diego County students, parents, law enforcement, community residents
and social advocates warn parents and other adults about hosting underage
drinking parties and providing alcohol to minors. Teens go door-to-door
delivering brochures, in five languages, informing them that its against
the law to give alcohol to minors and asking them to sign a pledge promising
not to be a source of alcohol for underage youth during Super Bowl celebrations,
where alcohol is highly promoted and teens often party right alongside the
adults.
Why:
 |
The Super Bowl is a televised event where adolescents comprise a significant
portion of the audience, and where alcohol is heavily advertised and
consumed. |
 |
Alcohol
is the number one drug used by teens and the biggest health risk for
adolescents. |
 |
Teens
say alcohol is easy to get in every community in San Diego County. |
 |
A
recent survey of California students revealed that 40% of 7th graders,
69% of 9th and 81% of 11th graders consider that alcohol is very easy
or fairly easy to get. |
 |
The
1999 Youth Risk Behavioral Survey showed that 41% of 9th graders,
32% of 10th, 31% of 11th graders, and 23% of 12th graders had their
first drink of alcohol before age 13. |
 |
Youth
get alcohol from strangers, older friends and relatives and at underage
drinking parties hosted by parents. |
 |
It is against the law to furnish alcohol to a minor, punishable by
up to $1,000 fine and a minimum of 24 hours of community service. |
 |
Adults
providing alcohol to teens are a major issue throughout San Diego
County. Another effort to combat this problem is the Tri-City Prevention
Collaboratives Teens Against Drugs and Alcohol (TADA) Parents
Who Host Lose the Most campaign. |
