Alcohol-Free Beaches: Focus Of Citywide Educational Campaign
Underage Drinking, Public Safety and Economic Impact of
Alcohol Consumption on the Beach are Main Issues
What:
Public health advocates, law enforcement, community residents and youth
launch a citywide campaign aimed educating citizens on the issues and concerns
of beach drinking. San Diego citizens need to have unbiased facts about
the problems of underage drinking, public safety, and the economic impact
of alcohol consumption on the beach.
Why:
 |
Teens have easy access to alcohol at the beach |
 |
There
are plenty of adults willing to give booze to minors; most of the
time underage drinkers and adult providers go undetected. |
 |
During
1999 and 2000, 2,583 minors were arrested for possession of alcohol
in Mission and Pacific Beach. |
 |
Over
17,000 alcohol violations were registered in Mission and Pacific Beach
from 1998-2000. |
 |
Pacific
Beach has the highest rate of DUI arrests in the city, many of which
result in injuries and death. |
 |
During
summer, up to 20% of the entire police force is assigned to the beach
area; about 50-60 officers on busy weekends. |
 |
Since
officers are reassigned to patrol beach communities, other areas in
the city have to be patrolled at reduced levels. |
