San Diegans Take Back Cinco De Mayo
Announce First Ever Alcohol and Tobacco-Free Parade and Festival; Launch Campaign to Restore True Meaning of Holiday


SAN DIEGO, CA – For years, Latinos in San Diego, and across the country, have seen the alcohol and tobacco industries exploit the Hispanic culture and seize the Cinco de Mayo holiday as a marketing tool to sell their products. They’ve had enough. “Your use and abuse of our heritage and culture stops here,” said Jovita Hurtado, chair of the San Diego Cinco de Mayo con Orgullo Coalition, created to take back the holiday and restore its true meaning. “We’re tired of the alcohol industry turning our holidays into all-you-can-drink events. Our culture is not for sale. Our people are not for sale.”

Parents And Adults Beware
Two-Week Spring Break Operation Cracks Down on Home Parties, College Drinking Parties and Underage Drinkers


Representatives from over 10 law enforcement agencies, community residents, parents and youth kick-off Operation Safeguard, a two-week countywide operation aimed at reducing underage drinking and youth access to alcohol during Spring Break. This year’s operation focuses on home parties, a common setting where teens drink. Operation Safeguard will also include DUI checkpoints, compliance checks, keg registration enforcement and shoulder tap and decoy operations. Law enforcement and community organizations will also be distributing public information brochures outlining underage drinking laws and the penalties for providing alcohol to minors.

East County Students To Receive Computers
5th Year for “Computers for Kids” Giveaway


While most students are planning their spring break, 15 middle school students will be breaking in their newly refurbished, fully loaded personal computers. Members of the East County Latino Association will distribute the free computers with software to students who were selected by school lottery. To qualify for the lottery, some 60 young people wrote essays explaining how a computer would help them with their schoolwork. Students must be without a home computer in order to enter. A one-hour, hands-on training follows the giveaway.

San Diego residents, business leaders, and youth rally against the alcohol and tobacco industries for control of Cinco de Mayo. The San Diego Cinco de Mayo con Orgullo Coalition announces the First Annual Alcohol and Tobacco-Free Cinco de Mayo Parade and Festival and launches campaign to restore the true meaning of the holiday. March 21 is the birthday of Benito Juarez, Mexico’s president at the time of the French invasion in 1862.

Supporters and Opponents Square Off On Controversial Ballot Initiative


Supporters and opponents of eliminating alcohol from Mission and parts of Pacific Beach debate this controversial ballot measure. During the debate, sponsored by the League of Women Voters, representatives from both sides will square off on several issues, including underage drinking, public safety and economic concerns related to beach drinking. San Diego voters will have a final say in the upcoming March 05, 2002 election.

Students Warn Parents and Other Adults about Hosting Underage Drinking Parties and Giving Alcohol to Minors


San Diego County students, parents, law enforcement, community residents and social advocates warn parents and other adults about hosting underage drinking parties and providing alcohol to minors. Teens go door-to-door delivering brochures, in five languages, informing them that it’s against the law to give alcohol to minors and asking them to sign a pledge promising not to be a source of alcohol for underage youth during Super Bowl celebrations, where alcohol is highly promoted and teens often party right alongside the adults.
