Taking
a Stand
East County Students Protest Sale of Alcohol & Drug Paraphernalia
Youth March to Local Stores and Ask Them to Stop Selling
Posters, T-shirts, & Other Items Promoting Underage Drinking and Substance
Abuse
What:
East County students and community members demonstrate against local stores
selling merchandise that promotes underage drinking and other drug abuse.
Teens will gather at Communities Against Substance Abuse for a rally and
announce results of a signature drive asking Spencer Gifts, Uforia, K-Mart,
and other stores to stop selling posters, and other items promoting substance
abuse. The students will then march to Parkway Plaza Mall and K-Mart and
back to CASA.
Why:
 |
Alcohol is the number one drug of choice among youth. |
 |
The
younger a person uses alcohol, the greater the chance of developing
alcohol dependence. (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism) |
 |
41%
of students between the ages of 10 and 17 reported drinking 10 or
more times in their lifetime according to a survey conducted by CASA
at Parkway Plaza Mall earlier this year. 28% said they had been drunk
10 or more times in their lifetime, according to the same poll. |
 |
Youth
are constantly bombarded with alcohol promotions. By age 18, a teen
would have seen over 100,000 television commercials, billboards, and
advertisements promoting alcohol consumption. (AAA Foundation for
Traffic Safety) |
 |
Children
and youth better recognize the Budweiser frogs and their slogan than
Tony the Tiger, Smokey the Bear, or the Power Rangers. (Center on
Alcohol Advertising) |
 |
The
alcohol industry spends nearly 2 billion each year to promote their
products. (Washington State Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking) |
 |
Alcohol
is the gateway for other drug consumption. |
 |
In
a recent survey among 12th graders, lifetime use of ecstasy increased
from 8% in 1999 to 11% in 2000-- one-in-nine seniors have tried ecstasy
in their lifetime. (Partnership for a Drug-Free America) |
 |
20%
of 7th, 26% of 9th, & 39% of 11th graders reported using an illicit
drug at least once in the past 6 months. (California Student Survey
1999-2000) |
