“Kick the Can – Bring on the Ban”
Teens Have Easy Access to Alcohol at San Diego Beaches
San Diego Youth Ask City Council to Let Voters Decide Whether Alcohol Should Be Banned

What:

San Diego area youth, law enforcement, public health officials and concerned residents gather at the beach to speak out about the dangers and public safety problems caused by alcohol consumption on San Diego beaches. Teens talk about how easy it is for them to get alcohol and to drink on the beach. Youth ask City Council to put the alcohol ban on the ballot and let San Diego voters decide whether alcohol should be eliminated from the beaches. On Monday, July 23, 2001, the City Council will vote to rescind the ban or put it on the ballot for the March 2002 election.

Why:
Youth have easy access to alcohol at Mission and Pacific Beach.
One teen gets arrested each day for consuming alcohol at the beach, while the adults who give youth the alcohol go undetected.
733 minors were arrested in Mission and Pacific Beach during 1999 and 2000 for possession of alcohol; only 7 adults were cited for providing alcohol to a minor.
1/3 of all alcohol-related arrests in San Diego takes place in Mission and Pacific Beach.
10,374 alcohol violations were registered in Mission Beach (1998-2000); Pacific Beach came in second with 7,019.
On Monday, July 23, 2001, the City Council will vote to rescind the restriction or put it on the ballot for the March 2002 election.
The great majority of California cities do not allow alcohol on their beaches.
