East County Launches Summer DUI Enforcement Blitz, Unveils Billboard:
“Drunk Drives, Meet Your New Bartenders"

What:

Five East County law enforcement agencies coordinate efforts for a DUI enforcement campaign to reduce the number of drunk and drugged drivers during the summer months. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol, El Cajon Police Department, La Mesa Police Department, and Border Patrol kick off the year-long enforcement activities with a public awareness billboard.

The billboard features a photo of five uniformed officers standing in front of jail bars with the message “Drunk Drivers, Meet Your New Bartenders.” The billboard is located at I-94 (Campo Road) and Jamacha Road (Facing East), and is being sponsored by the non-profit Communities Against Substance Abuse, Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, Discount Tires, and Lamar Advertising. Another goal is to reproduce the billboard throughout East County and reduce the incidence of impaired driving.

Why:
Alcohol-related crashes kill 1 person in the U.S. every 33 minutes; injure someone every 2 minutes.
In San Diego County, during 1999, (most recent statistics) 112 persons were killed and 2,832 injured in alcohol-related crashes.
Approximately 1.4 million U.S. drivers are arrested per year for DUI. Or 1 of every 132 drivers.
In San Diego County, during 1999, 14,461 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence, resulting in 11,170 convictions. During that same year, 2,256 DUI drivers were apprehended in East County and 1,782 resulted in misdemeanors.
