Two-Month Operation Yields Over 200 Arrests
Adults Are the Main Providers of Alcohol to Youth
What:
Representatives from 14 law enforcement agencies in San Diego County
announce results of Operation Safeguard, an underage
drinking campaign, which covered the entire Spring Break period for high
school and college students. During the nearly two-month operation, the
agencies conducted over 500 law enforcement activities DUI
checkpoints and roving patrols, decoy and shoulder tap operations, party
dispersals, etc.twice the number of operations compared to last year.
Over 200 people were arrested, including 83 for providing alcohol
to a minor.

Alcohol
is the number one drug of choice among youth. |

Alcohol-related
crashes are the leading cause of death among young people ages 15
to 24. Thats 42 youth every week, or six every day. |

During
1999 and 2000, 61 people under 21 in San Diego County died with alcohol
in their system. |
 |
Half
of all teen suicides and rapes involve alcohol. |
 |
Most
teens who get pregnant are drunk during sex. |
 |
Underage
drinking alcohol-related crashes, suicides, homicides, sexual
assaults, etc.costs California taxpayers $6.5 billion each year. |
