Nation Spends Over $80 Billion Per Year to Deal with Substance Abuse: Where Are Your Tax Dollars Going?
Experts Available to Talk about Local Spending and the Need for Increased Funding for Treatment and Prevention


SAN DIEGO, CA – On Monday, January 29, 2001, The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse will release the first study on state-by-state spending on substance abuse.

The study examined 1998 statistics and found that states spent $81.3 billion –13 percent of their budgets–to deal with substance abuse.

The study also revealed that of each $1 spent; 96 cents went to deal with the problems associated with substance abuse and only 4 cents to prevention and treatment. State-by-state breakdown will be available by 6:00 a.m. (PST) on www.casacolumbia.org.

At the local level, San Diego County spends about $1.8 billion per year to deal with substance abuse and nearly $25 million on treatment and prevention.
