| 26 January 2001 Nation Spends Over $80 Billion Per Year to Deal with Substance Abuse: Where Are Your Tax Dollars Going? Experts Available to Talk about Local Spending and the Need for Increased Funding for Treatment and Prevention SAN DIEGO, CA On Monday, January 29, 2001, The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse will release the first study on state-by-state spending on substance abuse. The study examined 1998 statistics and found that states spent $81.3 billion 13 percent of their budgetsto deal with substance abuse. The study also revealed that of each $1 spent; 96 cents went to deal with the problems associated with substance abuse and only 4 cents to prevention and treatment. State-by-state breakdown will be available by 6:00 a.m. (PST) on www.casacolumbia.org. At the local level, San Diego County spends about $1.8 billion per year to deal with substance abuse and nearly $25 million on treatment and prevention.
