| 14 December 1999 Community Donates Computers for Kids During Season of Giving Helps Keep Youth Clean, Sober & Involved in School Work What: Just in time for Christmas, students will get hands-on training and receive refurbished home computers with software installed, to own and share with their families. To make Computers for Kids possible, agencies throughout San Diego County generously donated the computers to youth who come from diverse backgrounds. They include U.S. Department of Justice, City of El Cajon, El Cajon Police Department, IVID Communications and others. Who: Twenty 6th, 7th and 8th grade students of Cajon Valley Middle School and their families. Invited guests from education, public health, business, government and, community. Why: The program targets middle school students, the age that they begin writing reports. Computers for Kids provides a level playing field for students who do not have the resources to obtain this type of equipment. "The groups who donate the computers realize that these students are our future leaders, and a better prepared student makes a better leader," says Victor Garcia, President of the East County Latino Association. Garcia adds that community programs like this greatly increase the chance for academic success, which reduces the likelihood of young people being influenced by alcohol, drugs and other negative factors. A one-on-one, hour-long training to be taught at the giveaway. In three years, Computers for Kids has given away more than two-hundred computers to students in East County. |
