East
County students ask adults to stop providing alcohol to minors
East County students kick off Project Home STOP, a countywide campaign on
underage drinking and youth access to alcohol.
Teens will meet Monday, Nov. 19 at 4 p.m. at Wells Park, 1153 East Madison
Avenue in El Cajon to go door-to-door thanking parents and other adults
for not hosting underage drinking parties and for not providing alcohol
to minors. Youths will deliver brochures warning them that its against
the law to give alcohol to teens; and ask them to sign a pledge promising
not to be a source of alcohol for teens.
WHY?
 |
Alcohol is the Number 1 drug used by teens and the biggest health
risk for adolescents. |
 |
Every
day, six young people under the age of 24 die in alcohol-related crashes
across the country. |
 |
During
1999 and 2000, 61 people under 21 in San Diego County died with alcohol
in their system. |
 |
Half
of all teen suicides and rapes involve alcohol. |
 |
Most
teens that get pregnant were drunk during sex. |
 |
A
recent survey of California students revealed that 40% of 7th graders,
69% of 9th and 81% of 11th graders consider that alcohol is very easy
or fairly easy to get. |
 |
Another
survey conducted at a local East County high school discovered that
40% of students get alcohol from parties where parents were present,
from older friends (58%) and 30% get it from strangers. |
 |
It is against the law to furnish alcohol to a minor, punishable by
up to $1000 fine and 24 hour community service. |
