Re: "Smoking in the Boardroom"

By Jenifer Hanrahan

It's all about being a parent.

The anonymous communications executive/soccer dad in the story smokes marijuana several times a week. Soccer dad says it's OK "at times when you're not caring for your children." But his own behavior shows he understands that parenting is a 24/7 job. He waits until the kids are asleep, then sneaks out by the garage to fire up his pipe. Then he showers and changes clothes, so the kids won't smell the pot smoke if they wake up and want their Daddy.

What if there's an emergency? He can't know when his child might need him to be an alert, unimpaired parent, rather than someone who's sleeping off a buzz.

It's all about being a parent.

It might be easy to hide his marijuana use now, but will it work when the kids are in high school? Probably not. They'll know that Dad smokes pot. And, one way or another, they'll emulate him.

The article contains some interesting quotes: "15 percent of couples with children admitted to smoking marijuana in the last year," and "Once people see how common it is, you are going to see marijuana legal in very short order."

Sound familiar? "Everybody's doing it. Why can't I?"
