Latinos give computers to 15 students

By Jill Spielvogel

EL CAJON – More than a dozen students headed home yesterday with the gift of high technology – a free computer for keeps. The East County Latino Association awarded donated and refurbished computers to 15 Cajon Valley Middle School students who didn't have one at home.

About 60 students wrote essays describing how a computer would help them with their schoolwork, and the lucky recipients were chosen by lottery. "It is our way of leveling the playing field so these kids have an opportunity to progress," said Victor Garcia, president of the association. "This is a key age to catch kids and create an interest that will lead them on the right path."

The association has donated about 350 computers to students in the last five years. Local businesses, government and community organizations donate the hardware, and volunteers for the association refurbish the equipment and load it with software.

Yesterday, the students and their families received an hour of training showing them how to use their new machines. The association also offers trouble-shooting and repairs, if needed.

Most students at Cajon Valley Middle come from low-income families, and Principal Martin Jaquez thinks that few have computers at home. Jaquez said access to computers makes a big difference in students' work, leading them to spend more time doing research and writing, and giving them greater opportunities for creativity. "The kids are really excited," he said. "This fills a void, which is very appreciated by Cajon Valley Middle School."
