Alleged meth lab raided, 3 arrested

ESCONDIDO – Law enforcement officials from several agencies on Tuesday night raided an Escondido home where methamphetamine was allegedly produced. Twelve officers from the Escondido Police Department, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the state Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement and the federal Drug Enforcement Agency raided the South Citrus Avenue home of Mark Woessner, 34, about 9:30 p.m., said Frank Jackson, deputy district attorney.

Authorities said they found an active methamphetamine lab in the basement and three children upstairs. The two 3-year-old twins and a 9-month-old baby were one floor above the "toxic and potentially explosive chemical brew being processed by the meth cookers," authorities said in a prepared statement. "When we entered the basement the fumes were so thick we could see a cloud of chemical vapors," said Special Agent Chris Paris of the state Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement. "The cloud of fumes could have been ignited by the pilot light of the water heater in the basement, or by the fire in the fireplace just upstairs."

Police arrested Woessner, and Charles and Charise Kane, both 33, on suspicion of felony child ndangerment, manufacturing methamphetamine and related drug charges, authorities said. The children, who belong to the Kanes, were taken into protective custody. Hazardous materials crews donned protective suits and spent several hours removing the contents of the drug lab, police said.
