| 1 February 2002 - The San Diego Union-Tribune Teens word to adults: Stop giving us booze With weekend Super Bowl parties in the offing, about two dozen teen-agers gathered in a City Heights recreation center yesterday to implore adults to "stop giving us booze." The youths then fanned out through the neighborhood, going door to door to give residents brochures reminding them that providing alcohol to anyone under 21 is illegal. Too often parents will provide their underage children alcohol at home, in family or party settings, said Pureza Bacor, a spokeswoman for Mid City for Youth Substance Abuse Moment Team, a nonprofit group that works to prevent youth alcohol consumption. Not only is providing alcohol illegal, it also sends a message to youth that it's acceptable to drink, she said. "I wanted to get the word out," said Maria Granada, 16, a junior at Mira Mesa High School, who attended the rally. The pamphlets against underage drinking passed out in the neighborhood were available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Laotian, Cambodian and Somali, Bacor said. Maria said she maintains her enthusiasm for the campaign even though some teens received hostile receptions yesterday. "Some people didn't cooperate, and some (youth) even got cussed out," she said. Others were "spat upon," she added. Groups opposing underage drinking hold such rallies occasionally and timed this one to occur before Super Bowl Sunday, one of the biggest drinking days of the year. The organization Communities Against Substance Abuse also sponsored the event. |
