| 31 October 2001 - The San Diego Union-Tribune Meth deaths increased last year There were 30 percent more methamphetamine-related deaths in San Diego County in 2000 than there were in 1999, according to a study released yesterday. There were 140 such deaths in 2000, up from 108 in 1999. The information was contained in an annual status report from the regional Methamphetamine Strike Force that was accepted by the county Board of Supervisors. In 1995, the first year of the task force's existence, there were 150 such deaths. The meth problem is not going away, said Rob Hall of Communities Against Substance Abuse, and organization that is part of the strike force. Supervisor Dianne Jacob lamented the increase in deaths, but she and other county officials cited positive news contained in the report, including the expansion of drug prevention services and decreases in the number of adults and juveniles who were arrested and tested positive for methamphetamine. The number of methamphetamine labs seized in the county went down by 13 percent, to 33, in 2000, the report said. |
