| 30 September 2001 - The San Diego Union-Tribune Ban on stimulants is good Re: NFL slaps a ban on stimulant ephedrine, leaves testing up in air (Sept. 28) Gaining three yards in a cloud of dust, the NFL has taken a step forward with its ban on ephedrine and similar substances contained in strength-building food supplements. Ephedrine and pseudoephedrine are effective medications for colds, allergies, and other conditions. But they carry health risks in when taken in high doses, or when used over a long period of time as food supplements. Ephedrine and pseudoephedrine are also precursor chemicals used to make methamphetamine, a deadly and destructive drug that continues to ravage San Diego County. That’s why there are limits on how much ephedrine and pseudoephedrine consumers can buy. And that’s why there’s a Meth Hotline (1-877-No2Meth), so retailers can report people who try to buy large quantities of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine. The NFL is to be applauded for banning these potentially dangerous stimulants. The new ban can preserve players’ health. It also helps make pro football a contest of athletic ability, determination and heart, not just better living through chemistry.
