| 1 September 2001 - Lakeside Gazette McAlister Institute moves ahead A little more than one month into implementation of Californias Proposition 36, San Diego Countys McAlister Institute recently announced that it received a $5,000 donation from the PacifiCare Foundation to further its residential services. According to Jeanne McAlister, Executive Director, the donation will be used to enhance employment training services at the Kiva Women and Children Family center, a residential substance abuse program in Lemon Grove for Women and their children. McAlister says, This type of financial assistance is vital to our organizations efforts. Kicking the Drug Habit is only a small part of clients getting back on their feet. Learning job skills while at Kiva is crucial to their clean and sober success. Implementation of proposition 36 is now in month three, it took effect July 1, 2001. For the Month of July, San Diego Countys four court jurisdictions referred 296 people to the prop 36 drug treatment program, according to Susan Bower of the County of San Diego Health and human services, alcohol and drug services. We project referrals to total some 3600 a year, says Bower. We need to add detox and short term, as well as, long term beds, she adds. McAlister plans to emulate the success of Kiva with another women and childrens facility. Although a residential drug-treatment center on Chase Avenue was denied by the City council, other areas are being sought to further this treatment center in providing care for patients needing care. |
