County warns of rural meth labs
County rolls out 'What's Cookin' In The Woods' campaign

SAN DIEGO, 6:23 P.M. PDT July 3, 2001 – Methamphetamine labs are moving out of the city and into rural areas – creating dumping grounds of hazardous materials, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.

Deputies say it's something to keep in mind this Fourth of July if you are planning a camping trip. Seizures of meth labs and dump sites on national forest land are up more than 300 percent, according San Diego County's methamphetamine strike force.

As a response to the startling rise in meth labs in rural areas, the county has launched the "What's Cookin' In The Woods?" campaign.

A number of hazardous, flammable chemicals are used in the making of meth, and obviously the people making it don't care too much about how they dispose of their waste.

"It's a deadly recipe for people who are not knowledgeable of the dangers," Michael Handman, of County Environmental Health, said.
