| 8 June 2001 - The San Diego Union-Tribune 205 arrested, cited in campaign to fight underage drinking By Joe Hughes A two-month effort targeting underage drinking has netted 205 arrests and citations. The total includes 83 adults who were arrested in connection with providing alcohol to minors, organizers said yesterday. Operation Safeguard ran through March and April and involved law enforcement agencies from throughout the county, community organizations, students, public health professionals and elected officials. The effort consisted of random drunken-driving checkpoints and operations where minors would try to buy alcohol or get adults to buy alcohol for them. The 14 agencies or groups involved conducted 535 checkpoints and operations during the effort, said Operation Safeguard coordinator Vince Jimno, a member of the San Diego County Law Enforcement Task Force on Underage Drinking. "We are not surprised at the results," Jimno said. "We are convinced adults are providing alcohol to teens. That is what kids tell us all the time." Adolfo Gonzales, acting San Diego assistant police chief, said: "How are we supposed to keep alcohol from kids when there are so many adults willing to provide it for them." The 83 adults arrested on suspicion of providing alcohol to minors face fines up to $1,000 and could be required to complete 24 hours of community service. "The problem is that adults are not taking a strong stand against underage drinking," said sheriff's Lt. Bill Southwell. |
