Fighting teenage drug abuse

By Chris MacKenzie

ALPINE – Alpine is definitely trying to solve the problems of teenage drug abuse. A carefully selected planning team, an advisory committee and a youth component have accepted invitations to attend the Substance Abuse Prevention Planning Kick-off on May 30 at 4 p.m. in the Alpine Community Center.

The meeting marks the beginning of planning efforts, which will continue for at least six months, to expand what is already been done locally. Tammy Ladderbush, the special events coordinator for the Community Center put it this way, “We need to approach this as a community, joining together all the efforts already under way.”

The Kickoff, which is by invitation only, will plan future open meetings to include a many interested people as possible. “We especially want to involve parents, “ said Ladderbush. “Some of them provide liquor and drugs for their children. They need to know that this is a ‘no tolerance’ situation with the law. The same is true for merchants, for instance, those who are careless about selling beer to underage youth. We plan to issue a binder explaining the legal aspects.”

The planning t5eam includes business owners and interested local residents. The advisory committee so far lists Lieut. Linda Fulton of the Sheriff'’ office, Pay Cannon from the Chamber of Commerce, Randy Rynearson, local businessman and Dr. Jere Ancell, Alpine superintendent of schools. The youth component so far has 14 young people from Joan MacQueen Middle School. High schoolers are currently being recruited to serve as well.

The initial group is being guided by the El Cajon Committee Against Substance Abuse which has already been working at ways to solve these problems.
