Group warns of "club drug" danger

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 14 – A local group launched a campaign Wednesday to educate parents about club drugs and over-the-counter medicines their kids may abuse to get high. Communities Against Substance Abuse, public health officials, and law enforcement officials gathered at El Camino Memorial Park this morning, to warn of the dangers of so-called “club drugs.” Those drugs include GHB, Ketamine, Rohypnol, Ecstasy, and others.

Over the past two years, the county medical examiner’s office says so-called “club drugs” have turned-up in fifty autopsies in San Diego County. Many of the people who use those drugs believe they’re safe, but that’s not the case.

At today’s news conference, Kenneth Shortridge told the story of how his son Caleb died of an accidental overdose of GHB. Lauren Bille, a former drug user, said she’s still grieving over the death of a friend, who died after taking a “club drug.”

Dr. Charles Simmons, director of the Emergency Department at Scripps Mercy Hospital, said “people don’t know what they’re taking, when they buy drugs at a club or party. The perception is that these drugs are safe. People don’t really understand that these drugs are dangerous.”

Communities Against Substance Abuse made five recommendations to help deal with Club Drugs.
Prosecute organizers of Rave, Circuit, and Home parties, for providing a locations where illicit drug activity takes place.
Seek increased law enforcement at parties where drug activity takes place.
Request that hospitals, clinics, and EMS responders gather information on the number of cases related to Club Drugs.
Encourage local news media to increase coverage of Club Drugs and to inquire more about them while covering those stories.
Include a Club Drugs component in Responsible Beverage Service training: Teach bartenders and wait-staff to recognize the signs of Club Drug use, because a combination of alcohol and club drugs can be deadly.
