| 14 February 2001 - KSWB 5/69 - KNSD 7/39 - KFMB 8 - KUSI 9/51 - KBNT 19 Group warns of "club drug" danger SAN DIEGO, Feb. 14 A local group launched a campaign Wednesday to educate parents about club drugs and over-the-counter medicines their kids may abuse to get high. Communities Against Substance Abuse, public health officials, and law enforcement officials gathered at El Camino Memorial Park this morning, to warn of the dangers of so-called club drugs. Those drugs include GHB, Ketamine, Rohypnol, Ecstasy, and others. Over the past two years, the county medical examiners office says so-called club drugs have turned-up in fifty autopsies in San Diego County. Many of the people who use those drugs believe theyre safe, but thats not the case. At todays news conference, Kenneth Shortridge told the story of how his son Caleb died of an accidental overdose of GHB. Lauren Bille, a former drug user, said shes still grieving over the death of a friend, who died after taking a club drug. Dr. Charles Simmons, director of the Emergency Department at Scripps Mercy Hospital, said people dont know what theyre taking, when they buy drugs at a club or party. The perception is that these drugs are safe. People dont really understand that these drugs are dangerous. Communities Against Substance Abuse made five recommendations to help deal with Club Drugs.
