| 1 February 2001 - North County Times 14-year-old honored with memorial and rally against alcohol Once again, we've seen a newspaper story reporting the death of a young person. This time it was a 14-year-old girl who died at Mira Mesa Community Park, and authorities say there was alcohol involved. Police are still sorting out exactly what happened, but the real question is, where did the alcohol come from? Chances are someone over the age of 21 bought a six-pack or a bottle for someone who wasn't old enough to buy it. Maybe it was a friend, or a younger brother, or a stranger. Maybe you've done the same thing. You bought alcohol and gave it to a friend, or your younger brother or sister, or maybe to your own child, and said to yourself, where's the harm? Here's the harm. Did you see the pictures of the teen-agers at the park the day after the girl died? They lost a friend and a classmate. A family lost a daughter. But it might not have happened if someone hadn't supplied the alcohol. And you can be fined $1,000 and sentenced to community service if you give alcohol to someone under the age of 21. Why risk causing a tragedy, or put yourself in jeopardy of legal trouble? Mary Harrison Carlsbad Article Snapshot (15K) |
