| 10 January 2001 - The San Diego Union-Tribune Alcohol crackdown deemed a success SANTEE A two-week pilot program to crack down on underage drinking has resulted in the arrest of 47 adults and 63 underage' drinkers and the seizure of six kegs of beer, the Sheriffs Department reported. "This is the first time we've done this," Sgt. Roy Heringer said, "but based on the success of this, we plan on repeating it at random, as needed." Heringer said the 47 adults were arrested on counts ranging from buying alcohol for minors to contributing to the delinquency of juveniles. Two of the adults arrested were liquor store owners and one was a convenience store clerk. One 18-year-old man was arrested twice for contributing to the delinquency of juveniles. He has been jailed since Saturday. Deputies placed liquor stores and supermarkets under surveillance and used underage "decoys" to see if they could buy alcohol. The juveniles who were arrested were detained at parties where alcohol was available. They were released to their parents or legal guardians. Article Snapshot (10K) |
