| 25 September 2000 - The San Diego Union-Tribune An underage driver and an adult accomplice By Mike Newell Re: "Driver, 18, gets 10-year sentence in fatal DUI crash" (B-section, Sept 21): No one would ever excuse the actions of an individual who willingly operates a motor vehicle while drunk and causes the needless death of a person. In this case, a 16-year-old student, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, was the victim of such a homicide. But another crime committed in this case once again goes unanswered. At some point, an adult was an accomplice to this crime. That adult allowed an 18-year-old to obtain the "10 cans of beer" that helped cause this crash. As part of a countywide effort to address youth access to alcohol, it is alarming that we as a community do not demand that adults who provide alcohol to minors be held accountable. Investigation and prosecution in these cases appear to be lacking or avoided. Article Snapshot (16K) |
