| 15 March 2000 - The San Diego Union-Tribune Removing children from dangerous drug environments Re: "Preventable tragedy: A 6-year-old killer indicts society" (Editorial, March 6): A tragic thank you for the editorial concerning the drug-infested home of the first-grader who shot and killed a classmate in Mount Morris Township, Michigan. The Union-Tribune has identified an appallingly common denominator in case after case of child abuse: drug addiction. The Michigan case should serve as a wake-up call to anyone who believes the ravages of drug use are limited to an individual user. It should be noted that the San Diego County District Attorney's Office has recognized the link between drug use and child endangerment. In two years, the San Diego County Drug Endangered Children Program has removed nearly 160 children from drug homes; specifically, homes where methamphetamine is manufactured. With increased funding and additional cooperation from law-enforcement agencies, the program has the potential to remove even more children from drug environments, requiring that their parents undergo intensive drug treatment if the family is to be reunited. The Meth Strike Force operates an anonymous hotline to report meth-related crime which includes reporting drug homes where children are present. The number is 1-877-No2Meth. ROBERT K.
