Marijuana

By Patrick Brown

Over the decades marijuana has always been a big subject among the teen population as well as the adults. There have been studies which state that to most sixth grade students a "bag" is just an ordinary paper or plastic bag, but to seventh grade students, just one year older, a "bag" means a bag of marijuana. In recent years, it has turned from a teen fad to something short of an epidemic across the country, and the world.

The worst part is it is so easy to get. A kid could be walking home by way of his friendly neighborhood drug dealer. You never know. Then again the kid could be getting it from his friends, or even stealing it from his parents or other family. The problem is it's flowing over the borders, coming in from everywhere, and we can't stop it all. You always hear about big drug busts at the border, but they only catch about forty-five percent of everything that comes over the border. That leaves over half of what tries to get in.

Another problem with kids and teens using marijuana is the fact that they, in some cases, come from a home where smoking pot is an everyday thing, and no one seems to care. It is pretty much "monkey see, monkey do." Even your friends might try to get you to try it, with popular phrases like, "Everyone else is doing it" and "It won't hurt to try it once." Well, for most people, it won't hurt too much if they try it once or twice, but some others are addictive people and so they like the sleepy high they get off it, and they keep doing it. The statement about everyone else doing it, is a false one. As a matter of fact, while the use of marijuana is rising slightly in younger teens, thirteen and fourteen, it is dropping in the older crowd, fifteen to nineteen. There are still those who choose to stay with their friend, who they think will always be there for them.

Most experts in the field believe that in the next few year, as the next generation of teenagers comes up to the plate, most of them will choose not to smoke marijuana. They also believe that there will always be a certain percent of teens who will choose to "toke up" with their friends. These experts believe that the percentage of teens that choose to smoke pot will become less and less as time goes on.
