Screenings for drug use offer prevention

Congratulations to the proactive emergency department at Tri-City Medical Center. They are indeed on the cutting edge of patient care by adding drug and alcohol screenings to emergency department protocol ("Screening program a help for patients," Aug. 7).

A brief discussion about alcohol and drug use with a trained health counselor is an ideal and nonconfrontational way to educate the community about high-risk substance use. When the experimental program was first inaugurated at Scripps-Mercy hospital last year, surveys indicated that some 60 percent of emergency room visits were related to alcohol and drug use. Health-care professionals who take a minute to educate patients about high-risk substance use empower their patients with the knowledge to lead healthier lives through drug, and alcohol addiction prevention.
